I’m excited to share this year’s results from the Professional Photographer’s of America Internation Print Competition (IPC)! I compete to push myself, and to grow as an artist. I really enjoy it, and this is my fourth year entering. This year, four of my images were accepted into the General Collection, three of which will be published in this year’s showcase book. Three of my images were accepted into the esteemed Loan Collection and will be published in this years loan book. I also received a bronze medal for my artist case.
A huge thank you to Michelle Parsley for always pushing me to be a better artist! Here are my images.
Official Press Release
Santa Clarita Photographer Named Bronze Medalist at International Photographic Competition
Farrah Welch of Farrah Welch Photography is honored by peers and jurors for high-quality photography.
Santa Clarita, California – Farrah Welch of Farrah Welch Photography in Valencia, California was named a Bronze Medalist during Professional Photographers of America’s 2020 International Photographic Competition. Farrah’s work will be on display at the upcoming Imaging USA, held virtually January 17-19, 2021. Imaging USA is one of the largest annual conventions and expos for professional photographers.
A panel of 36 eminent jurors from across the United States selected the top photographs from over 5,000 total submitted entries at PPA headquarters in Atlanta. Judged against a standard of excellence, 1,706 images were selected for the General Collection and 865 (roughly 17 percent) were selected for the esteemed Loan Collection—the best of the best. The Loan Collection images will all be published in the much-anticipated “Loan Collection” book by Marathon Press.
The level of the award is determined by how many of those four images receive the highest possible honor: acceptance into the PPA Loan Collection, which is displayed at photographic exhibitions, conventions, and other photography events. Farrah was named a Bronze Medalist by earning a merit—a mark of quality and honor—for each of the four images included in their entry case to the International Photographic Competition. This is the most prestigious competition of its kind, where images are judged based on a standard of artistic excellence, not against each other. In 2020, they were one of only 170 Bronze Medalists.

A while back, I posted that one of my photos had won second place in the children’s portrait category for the PPA Western District Competition. I couldn’t post the photo at the time, because it still had to be judged at international. Well, I can finally share the photo along with the results from The Professional Photographer’s of America 127th International Photo Competition!
This year I entered two separate cases– one into photographic open, which focuses on photography, and one into the artist competition, which focuses on the artistry and post-processing of the image. This was my second year for photographic open, and first year for artist. Each case has four entries. My photographic open case got a bronze medal, each of them going into the PPA General collection (each one of these earned a merit). One of the images in that case, Glee, is the one that got second place at districts and it will be published in this years PPA Showcase Book). From my artist case, two of my images were accepted into the loan collection after receiving very high scores (each earning two merits). Both of these will be published in this year’s PPA Loan Book. It was super exciting, and working on these images for competition really helps me to refine my craft and create better images for my clients!
Here is the official press release for my bronze case, and all the images!

This is my second year entering the Professional Photographers of America (PPA) Western District Photographic Competition. I’m super excited (and a little shocked!) to announce that I got second place in the Children’s Portrait category for one of my baby photos. In fact, I never would have checked to see… luckily someone noticed and tagged me in the announcement! I can’t share the photo yet, because it will go on to be judged for IPC (PPA’s International Print Competition), but I’m very excited about this particular image. My whole case sealed too! (which means they will all go on to win merits at IPC). I will share it as soon as the results come in for IPC!
Congratulations to all of the other award winners! There were some amazing images this year and it was so fun to take part and watch the judging!

This year, 2017, was my first entering the Professional Photographer’s of America (PPA) International Print Competition (IPC). I decided to start my journey toward my PPA Master of Photographer Degree, a journey toward improving my skills and my art, a journey for myself and for my clients. It was fun, it was exciting, and it was an incredible learning experience. And the result? Three of my images merited and one loaned! I even got interviewed on IPC Live during the competition, which was a great opportunity!
It is such an honor to have my images selected by my peers and PPA jurors for high-quality photography. These images will be on display at the Gaylord Opryland Convention Center in Nashville, Tennessee, Jan. 14-16, 2018. This International Photographic Exhibition is held in conjunction with Imaging USA, an annual convention and expo for professional photographers. “A Mother’s Love,” “Inquisitive Charm,” and “Inseparable” will be displayed in the International Photographic Exhibition alongside other top photographic works from the competition and traveling and special invitational displays. These images constitute one of the world’s largest annual exhibits of professional photography gathered simultaneously under one roof. “Inseparable” was selected for the esteemed Loan Collection—the best of the best, and will be published in the much-anticipated “Loan Collection” book by Marathon Press.
Thank you to Julia Kelleher and to Michelle Parsely, for sparking my interest in print competition and starting me on this journey. Thank you to Christie Newall for your wealth of information and your passion for sharing it with photographers like me who are jumping in to print competition. Thank you to Janel Pahl for taking the time to mentor me, help me sort out the twelve elements as they applied to my own body of work, and for your honest and invaluable critiques. Thank you to my husband, Arthur Vail, for always being willing to take “just one more look.” Finally, thank you to Richard Newall and Booray Perry for having me as a guest on IPC Live! You are each a star that aligned, with perfect timing, and led me down a captivating path through my first International Print Competition. Thank your for your inspiration, your time, and your energy. I can’t wait for next year!
Here are my images with their official gold seals.
